I work exclusively in encaustics now.

Encaustic is the classic Greek art of painting with hot, pigmented beeswax. I think I was subconsciously drawn to it because of this ancient connection. I first wanted to use the translucent beeswax unpigmenited and combine it with gold leaf, and that’s where it all started. In those first paintings, as I worked with the wax, the structure within the painting reminded me of ancient cave paintings and evoked thoughts of the human evolution of communication. The ancient artists were the foundation of man’s vast achievements of learning and progress.

I’m fascinated with the mark-making of different cultures and the way all images are a form of communication for us. As a visual artist I am free to combine images from the past and present and by layering these, physically and symbolically in my work, create a link between myself and my antecedents. It is the cornerstone of my personal search for meaning and feelings about life’s philosophies and choices.

Most of my work is a series progression, one piece leading to the next. I have chosen to visually reveal the progression of my continuing Matrix series for this show. This series is about “paths taken and not taken”. How appropriate for I have expanded in a new direction with this show: a sculpture about the pillars of the ancient alphabets.
